POST-EVENT

SPORTS MASSAGE

Post-event sports massage is a type of massage that occurs within 12 hours of the Sports event.  Post-event massage focuses on helping the athlete who wants to recover from their competition or event in a very specific manner.  Post-event massage is usually given on a massage table and looks similar to a full-body massage. Unlike Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage therapy Sports Massage focuses specifically on the muscles which worked the hardest recently.  This specificity will get the athlete ready for the next time they need to perform as soon as humanly possible.

DELAYED ONSET OF MUSCLES SORENESS

Understanding DOMS

The delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) is characterised by a combination of pain and a decreased ability to generate force following unaccustomed exercise using eccentric muscle contractions.

  • Muscle soreness usually begins 12 – 24hrs post activity and peaks at 48hrs while the deficits in muscle force generally occurs 24 – 48hrs following exercise.

  • The cause of pain remains unclear, but has been linked to the damage of muscle fibers and connective tissue causing an inflammatory response and toxic chemicals stimulating nerve endings.

  • In many sports, athletes are expected to train 24 to 72 hours after their previous session. As muscle damage and soreness can have a limiting effect on muscle performance in the days after exercise, post-exercise recovery is a vital part of any training program.
